The Portal is part live rock concert, part immersive theater performance, and part film; all woven together into a holistic piece of powerful, transformative, and artistic entertainment.
A bold and unique undertaking, The Portal offers a musical and theatrical experience of unprecedented vision and creativity. The storyline is similar to a mythological epic (e.g.: The Odyssey, Gilgamesh) and follows the character Dante on a visual journey through the desert and mountains -- and through fractal fire, water, and love --while on a path of personal discovery and otherworldly experiences. The plot serves not only as the structure of the show, but also as a conduit for the audience to engage in their own journey and experience.
While The Portal may be most similar in format to a 'rock opera' like Pink Floyd's The Wall, it incorporates elements that go far beyond the familiar including dance, cinematography, mythology, fractal art, and audience participation - all of this is backed by a tremendously talented live band.
Utilizing the "trance theory" concept developed by producer and director Luke Comer, The Portal applies fractal mathematics and concentric pattern repetition to the show's visuals, music, performance, and lighting in such a way that they create a unified sensation and mesmerizing effect for the audience.
Drawing from psychedelic rock and electronic dance, The Portal at the very least delivers a hard-hitting musical performance that will captivate fans of Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Burning Man, and electronic genres. The theatrical crowd will be similarly pleased to find The Portal offers Denver a look into immersive theater, which has roots in New York's theater and arts scene, but is rarely seen west of the Hudson.
The Portal is an impressive undertaking for an all Denver-based cast and crew. While much of the film component of the show was shot in the mountains outside Moab, Utah, and in Colorado's high Rockies, the rest of the world-class production and its staff, including it's creator Luke Comer, are all Boulder and Denver based.
